Bust out the Bubbly…

September 29, 2010

During my first trip to Europe (in 2006) I was the annoying American tourist that you often spot in restaurants yelling “NO BUBBLES IN MY WATER…FLAT…FLAT….JUST PLAIN….NO BUBBLES!”  But, on my second trip over yonder (in 2009) I began to fancy the fizzy stuff, and the next year for Christmas I got my very own carbonated water machine.

I’m a fan of just popping a tank of tap water on there and fizzing away (my sister’s fiance’ affectionately calls this “Burp Water”, call it what you want), but recently Josh and I have discovered the wide range of flavors available through Soda Stream (the company that makes our carbonation machine and replacement cartridges).

Their flavors are better for you than traditional soda and contain (on average) 1/3 of the calories. Pepsi and Coca-Cola both contain 100 calories and 27 grams of sugar, while flavoring your carbonated water with Soda Stream’s cola flavoring will give you a refreshing beverage with 34 calories and 9 grams of sugar. Our favorite flavor so far is Soda Stream’s orange flavoring, 36 calories and 8 grams of sugar compared to 130 calories and 35 grams of sugar from Sunkist. It doesn’t stop at soda flavorings, you can also find a wide range of subtle fruity water flavorings.

Whether you’re trying to cut back on soda or just calories in general, having your own Soda Stream machine in your home is a fun alternative for spicing up any beverage. My 10 year-old sister loves apple juice, orange juice and cranberry juice that is cut with carbonated water. Besides, the stuff never goes flat, and if it does you just pop it back on the machine to add more carbonation.

Soda Stream’s product line ranges in price from $99 to $249 for the machines, with flavors starting at $4.99. You can find them online at Soda Stream’s website or at Williams-Sonoma, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Bed Bath & Beyond and Shopko.
